Haircare Review: Shine On Original Conditioning Hair Glaze & Colour Restore in Chocolate

Tuesday, 14 January 2014

In need of a quick hair fix, but on a budget or feeling the pinch after Christmas?  Scott Cornwall's Shine On and Colour Restore products let's you acheieve that "just come back from the hairdresser's" look for a fraction of the price.

Shine On Original Conditioning Hair Glaze* (£12.99, link)
Suitable for natural and coloured hair

The last time I was at the hairdresser's, my stylist recommended a 'Diamond Finish Treatment' which was on a special promotion offer as the salon had just started doing it that week.  I decided to give it a go and left two hours later with the most flawlessly shiny hair I've ever had in my life.  Sadly, the full price was far too much for a student like me to afford on a regular basis, so I've been looking for something similar that I could try out at home.

Shine On Original Conditioning Hair Glaze works in a comparable way to the treatment I had done in the salon, but is much friendlier on the purse strings, and a lot less damaging to the hair because it doesn't have any ammonia or super harsh chemicals in it.  Instead, it's a protein rich, conditioning hair glaze gelee that contains a unique 'diamond' clear molecule and uses the same oxidation process that traditional hair colourants use, but instead of sealing colour into the hair, it seals these diamond esque clear molecules.  It's this technique that gives mega watt shine to the hair, whilst the collagen formula hydrates and softens it.

Using it was really easy and only took about half an hour.  There's a how to video here, but basically you apply the Pre Cleanse Treatment first to get rid of any product build up, so you're left with completely clarified hair.  Next, you mix the Collagen Shine Cream with Developer and then apply it mainly to the lengths and ends, avoiding the roots.  Leave it on for around 20 minutes and then thoroughly rinse it all out and style as normal.

I was left with incredibly glossy looking hair that also felt soft, swishy and was completely frizz free.  I must admit that the result wasn't as insanely shiny as the salon treatment I had, but I was more than impressed!  The results are meant to last for up to 24 washes, but I found it started to dull after around 2 weeks.  For a quick fix or special occasion though, I would definitely use it again.
Colour Restore in Chocolate* (£11.99, link)
Suitable for natural and coloured hair

Colour Restore is an easy to use pure pigment hair toner which brings coloured hair back to life, but can also be used to enhance your natural hair colour too.  It's non permanent, and contains no harmful ammonia, peroxide, or PPDs.  My hair is natural at the moment, so I used it to add a bit more depth and richness.

To use, I first washed my hair with a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any product build up and then towel dried it.  I applied a small amount of Colour Restore all over my hair, ensuring that it was evenly coated and combed it through repeatedly for around 5 minutes.  After that, I rinsed it under warm water until the water ran clear, then dried and styled it as normal.  If you have blonde or coloured hair, you may need to leave it on longer than I did (do the all important 48h patch test too!) and always make sure you wear the enclosed gloves and cover any areas to prevent staining.

The results I got was a subtle, but noticeable difference to the overall shade of my hair.  It looked more glossy and my natural brunette hair appeared much more rich.  Again I was impressed, and I imagine that the bottle will do at least another 4 or 5 treatments for me.

Have you tried / do you use any quick fix hair products like this?

  1. I've tried these two and I really enjoyed Colour Restore, however it ran a little on to my white clothing a few days after use!

    1. I was really worried it was going to do that to me because it's SO pigmented but luckily I haven't experienced this (yet!). How long did you leave it on for before rinsing? x

    2. I've used my tube a few times, and it seemed to run most when I'd left it on for over half an hour! s

    3. Thanks Jenny - I've only done the 5 minute 'Comb Through Method' with it so I'll bear that in mind for future uses! x

  2. I tried this but have to admit the cleansing treatment felt really stripping of my hairs natural oils and I wasn't that impressed with the result!

    1. I didn't find the Pre-Cleanser too badly stripping, but I do use a lot of masks and oils on my hair on a regular basis (probably too much!), so I'm guessing it just took all the product build up off and didn't go much further? Sorry to hear it didn't work for you! x
