My time in Frankfurt was mostly spent visiting family, but I managed to cram a lot of sight-seeing into the trip too. Whilst Frankfurt is the largest financial centre in continental Europe (you can perhaps see from the foggy skyline above why it's often dubbed 'Little Manhattan' too), it also has a great wealth of cultural offerings with museums catering for all tastes and lots of little independent shops which give you a taste of all things German.
Photos from top to bottom: 1. A foggy look at the river from the main bridge. 2, 3 & 4: Gustave Caillebotte impressionist and photography exhibition at the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE Frankfurt. 5. Cathedral 6. Delicious German cakes in a local bakery. 7. Modern Art Museum - amazing exhibitions ranging from illustration, photography, graphic design, visual media and just random crazy stuff. 8. Time for breakfast. 9. Outside of a rock club in one of Frankfurt's many suburbs. 10. Wall mural in a beautiful independent chocolate shop. 11. Pieces of art being sold to support Pussy Riot & Amnesty International.
12. A walk along the river early in the morning. 13. Yummy chinese food from Asia Gourmet in the main train station. 14. Chocolate cat tongues anyone?! 15. Flamingos at Frankfurt Zoo. 16. Meeting point tower. 17, 18 & 19: Natural History museum with dinosaurs! 20. Germans call Pugs 'Mops' for some reason?! 21. Posh Currywurst served in a restaurant for business people. 22. Voices of the city monument. 23. Breakfast featuring more sausages. 24. Political graffiti - there were lots of this dotted around the city in response to austerity measures. 25. German architecture. 26, 27, 28 & 29: World Culture Museum.
I'd definitely recommend Frankfurt as a place to go for a long weekend or to use a base if you're travelling around central Europe. There's so much to see and do, and it's of course great for shopping too! You can see part 1 of my photo diary focusing on the Christmas market here.
